Also I'm afraid that won't solve it because the issue is not with core Vanilla, it's with the vanilla forums plugin for wordpress... the comments are sorted properly on the actual discussion page.

There is probably a way to change it via the code of the WordPress plugin; however, because there is an option to change the sorting of the comments in Vanilla 2.1, then it is actually controlled from the Vanilla side.
