Am i right in thinking the chmod for vanilla should be
directories 755
files 644 ?

775 should be fine, 777 is pretty bad.
644 is fine for anything outside of cache/ uploads/ and conf/

The folders, you may need to individually chmod files within those folders too. So yep.
