What are your thoughts on addons and themes that want you to display author or website.

Some addons and themes require nothing but you install them to use them. Some want you to display a link to the author's website or the author's name. Wouldn't it be enough to leave the authors name in the source code than having to be an advertisement for the author. Does it give you second thoughts whether you will use a certain addon if that is a requirement. And the slippery slope - what if everybody who uploads an addon makes the request that you display there name on your site if you use their code or parts of it. Wouldn't this lead to a cast of thousands and you would need streaming credits like at the end of a movie.
Granted it is the authors perogative. But does it give you pause it this required.
I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.

Personally, I think Vanilla should create a credits link.
That link is displayed in footer and onclick, opens a vanilla page and yanks in the plugins name, author name, date deployed, current version etc.

its an idea. I don't think anybody running a forum would add it, since it provides no benefit to the person running the forum. Look at all the response to this message![:) :)](https://open.vanillaforums.com/plugins/emojiextender/emoji/little/smile.png)

It wouldn't make me happy or sad, but it would make me wrong. Are you going to be a sponsor along with 422 and try to get x00 to write it
. It could be called accolade credits
.
edit:
I already volunteered two sponsors and a developer

fair enough... but if you write the plugin, i figured you would be happier to see it actually used on a production site.

I did, and then I woke up and the code was gone. Actually, I'm not really a supporter of the idea, nor am I supporter of themes or plugins requesting that you display the author's web site or name (just adds a lot of clutter). But the credits would avoid the clutter, though, but once again I don't think it is in high demand. Also, we would need to appropriately thank all the designers of web software, the mouse, ethernet, OS's, tcp/ip. mysql, etc etc.

From my experience, some incentive is required for designers and coders. Hence it should be displayed with instructions to remove them.

This is why I prefer permissive.
I don't get why people complain about it though.
grep is your friend.
Oh and I'm not coding anything like that, it is not my prerogative.
