Why do I get a "Bonk - something funky happened" error on clicking "resend confirmation email" link?

Hi,
I have checked the "Require users to confirm their email addresses" checkbox in the "User Registration Settings" in Dashboard. When a new user applies for membership, they get a message at the bottom asking them to confirm their email.A resend confirmation link appears here. The new applicant sometimes gets the email. If they click the link within the email received or they click the "resend email" link in the forum, in both cases they get an error "Bonk - something funky happened". I have set the outgoing email option also.
Why does this happen? Is there any fix?
