Is turning on Vanilla's Statistics the only way to increase discussion view count?

I'm just wondering if turning on the statistics is the only way to make views increase. I've looked around and did some searching here in the forums and I believe @Todd mentioned that view counts are being pinged through JavaScript.
Unfortunately I am unable to turn on statistics due to company restrictions and have only "enabled" it by adding $Configuration['Garden']['Analytics']['AllowLocal'] = TRUE; to the config.php file for my local dev environment. However, the view count is still not incrementing like it should. Is it because I haven't registered for an API key yet?

I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.
I actually read that same discussion before, but when I do that, my view count increases by the number of comments in that discussion each time the page is reloaded. (i.e. If I have 100 comments in a discussion and I refresh it, the view count increases by 100 each time. Weird I know. )EDIT: I take that back... You're awesome. lol
