So how does this forum do it?
I find that people (Mac users at least) always know a new window has opened and are happy to know they can close it to get back to where they were easily.

Me too I think using different page (even better tab) is great and would like to help people using it.
But I know 3 type of people who don't like that:
The ones with old computers that freeze when a new windows open
my mother who don't know much about internet and is frighten by any change in her habit (and the back button is her best friends)
poeple who think "target attribut"=fascist
You know better people who come on your forum and if there are one these types.
