The original plugin, although a good idea, is limited in use due to using a global timer for the whole application. It also gets screwed when more than one tag is present in a conversation.
@peregrine, are you sharing your version of the countdown plugin for public use? How about uploading it to the addons section here and calling it "Timers"? It would be really convenient for those dealing with events.
As a suggestion, a nice addition would be making it possible, based on the tag content, to choose the output format and not only the target date. For example:
There could be defaults so that tags don't need to be written in full. For example:
"03:21" [COUNTDOWN 23:59] (Default to current date and default output format)
