Gmail as SMTP

SpongeBobSpongeBob New
edited August 2012 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8

My server do not have SMTP server. I wish to use gmail.
I set to use remote server
smtp.gmail.com
port 465
SSL

I get no error and no emails
I checked apache error.log and there is no errors either.

I read the forum and it seems other people are getting some errors or post relate to older version that had no SSL support.

Please, advice

  • Please, confirm if any remote SMTP works for you.

I've used gmail in the past and they've worked fine. Maybe gmail is cracking down on this?

  • Is there way to debug it?

    • Send test email
    • Get some log notice that, forum will send email,
    • etc

    Thank You

  • I don't know if you want to test with this, it works quite well for me.

I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.

  • I ran fakemail.py on server, set localhost 10025 no ssl in vanilla and sent private message. Nothing happened. Registered user. Nothing emailed again. I just setup forum. It has default settings.

  • ./fakemail.py --host=localhost --port=10025 --path=.
    Starting fakemail.py
    Listening on port 10025
