problem with changing themes

hi folks,

I have just installed a vanilla forum. appears to be running fine with the Vanillaversion 2.0.18.4 standard theme.
however, I cannot seem to change to any other theme.

"preview" and "apply" both throw me the "bonk" page even with the pre-installed "Embed-Friendly" and "Mobile" themes.

any hints would be highly welcome,

    the problem is - you have asked a question that has been answered - thousands of times before if not millions. So you wanted a hint.... here are 3 hints.

    hint: look for a box on the upper right of your screen on this forum it has the label "search"

    type "bonk" in the search box.

    yes i did - it worked when I posted it to verify before I gave you the hint.

    but nothing is found in searches now, no matter what you search for, a glitch - hopefully someone will resolve this

    did you try hint 2? if so what were your results.

    on the documentation page visually locate and click on

    Errors & Troubleshooting (BONK)

    then you will probably find out you need to set permissions correctly on the compile directory
