Friendly URLs installation problem

I've just installed Vanilla (great quick install!), and am trying to install the Friendly URLs extension, but the Readme file says:
Open up conf/settings.php and add this...
There is no 'conf' directory but there is a settings.php file in both the 'appg' directory and the 'controls' directory.

Which one should I edit?

    You're using 0.9.2.6, and the extension was written for 1.0

    OK. The latest version over at GetVanilla.com is 0.9.2.

    Where can I get an upgrade? (presumably I can, if there's already extensions for it)

    Nice Paul, 1.0 is pre-release - there's a link for the pre-release in the comments of this blog post.You might want to wait until the 1.0 proper release (imminent we hope) or if you want the most recent version, get it from SVN - instructions here.

    BTW: Friendly URLs work fine. very nice mark.

    I have also a problem with this extension. mod_rewrite is installed at my hosting, but the extension refuses to work. only apache errors are shown. should be a misconfiguration on the server. arrrrrggggghhhhhhh..... :(((((

    Yea, my Apache says "500" ... It's a misconfigration, too. I hope that I can fix it.

    Does this mean you wouldn't recommend using this add-on? I went to install it yesterday but found it a little confusing so was planning on trying again this evening, but won't if there are any drawbacks to using it ;(

    The only drawback is that you will tear your hair out while trying to install it.

    It's so nice havging clean URLs. Love this extension.

    One thing to keep an eye on: it might break some other extensions. For example "Who's Online". If you're in discussions/, it tries to go to discussions/account.php?u=whatever.
