WordPress Roles and Vanilla v1 Roles

edited May 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Ive been waiting eagerly for the release of v1 of Vanilla as i wish to take advantage of the people class to merge my WordPress users with the Vanilla board, i have sadly just got around to installing the SVN (everything looks great btw :D) and noticed the role functions withing Vanilla. I assume (as i know Mark is good in this way) that it will be more than possible to cross reference WordPress Roles with Vanilla Roles, if this is already in place - then slap my wrist for being dumb and asking, ive yet to have a proper look through the source of v1 and im just plucking at possible things that could get in the way of merging the two web apps. Apart from that im really excited about doing this :D

My theory is that wordpress' handling of roles and permissions should remain in wordpress, and Vanilla's should remain in Vanilla. Technically this would mean that the user table would have a VanillaRoleID and a WordpressRoleID. I hadn't given it any more thought than that. Trying to build innate integration with any other application is a difficult thing. I'm not going to single out one application - even one as popular as wordpress - and specifically add code to make the integration slicker. That can be done with extensions should the need arise. Right now the best you'll get is a shared user table between Vanilla and any other application you want (assuming the other app runs on mysql). For more info on how to achieve this, check out the swell blog entry on it: http://lussumo.com/swell/42/Data-Objects-External-Application-Integration/
