Enable different discussions by permissions

Is it possible to use permissions to enable some discussion and content to users with that permission and hide those discussions fom others who do not have that permission? If so what do I need t do to set that up?

    you need to set up special categories with permissions for a particular role to that category (with custom permissions) in the dashboard
