adding a user preference that's not a checkbox?

the wiki shows how to add a simple labelled checkbox to the user's preferences page. i'd like my extension to add a couple of select boxes as well. i don't want to depend on any further extensions like Predefined Attributes. is there a builtin way to do this?

    Yeah, I just programmed it into the core to make my new flickrizer addon easier. When I get back to sask next week I'll upload. I'm at the mac store again posting right now.
