How to display the most recent post of a subcategory under parent category on the homepage?

I am using 2.1a36. I have "all categories" set as my homepage. I made a few sub categories for a few parent categories which are displayed on the homepage. When i post a discussion in a sub category it doesn't show up on the parent category under "Most recent" on the homepage. Is there a way to update the homepage's parent categories "Most recent" with the sub categories discussion title, poster and date?
