How can I add icons to the sidebar menu? (2.1b)

Howdy! So I want to add some custom icons next to each link in my sidebar menu, but I have no idea which template(s) to edit. What's the quickest/easiest way to do this? Can it be done via CSS only?
Any input appreciated!

You can use the "Sprites" plugin that comes bundled with 2.1 for this.
