question about updating my vanilla forum

Ok, so I know there are updates that I need to do but have always been afraid that I would loose my forum, it would go back to stock... will I loose all of what I have done? how to I install the updates without loosing everything?
Sorry, not a tecky, learning as I go.

back up the entire thing twice. The upgrade to 2.0.18.8 involved only a couple files from the library db mysql folder. You could theoretically just replace the core files in the library folder. Then manually change the version to the newer one in your config.php

Make sure you have a backup of your database, and that you can reinstall it if anything goes wrong.
The database IS your forum.
The Vanilla files are the box you keep it in. (Not technically accurate, but essentially true.)
If you lost your Vanilla folders you could have a working forum back in 5 minutes if you have your DB.
Lose your DB, er, that's it.
Before upgrading, I always clone my Vanilla installation folder (make a copy of it!)
That way, if anything goes wrong, you can just delete the new folder, rename your cloned version back to its original name, and everything is back to normal.
