Removing non-existent members

I've set up on my forum the 'application and approval' method of registration, where I get a list of all members wanting to join the site, and can approve those I want, and deny those that seem to be spam bots (or people I know only want to cause trouble, should that ever come up) It works really well, but for some reason, my statistics page, member list and so on count all these declined spam bots as members, even though they were never part of the site. Is there any way of removing these, so I get the right number of members displayed everywhere, since they don't show up anywhere on the site or dashboard for me to remove.
Also, while I'm at it, I note that every single one, without fail, uses the same message on applying to join, is there any way of filtering applications by that message and automatically blocking them?
Many thanks

use botstop.

@kitutal
this is the nature (not a very good nature), that declined applicants still reside in the user table. They probably should be removed from the user table when declined! I don't see a reason not to. Can anybody think of one.
P.S. - I updated Statistics Footer plugin to not show declined applicants.
