just to let you know...all my hours spent loading plugins just went down the drain...i deleted a straage empty plugin..only to find out that all my plugins got wiped out together with its settings... :-)
this is the most misunderstood part of running a server.
Because I set my permissions up properly, such an option never revealed itself, so when I first heard about this, I didn't think it was credible, turns out they did provide this option unfortunately. However it remains a bad idea. Simply for a little convenience, even if it didn't wipe all plugins, it is bad idea to arbitrarily lower the permission of the plugin folder.
Always set up permission up correctly, it is not to do with one app, it is good practice, you are responsible for managing your server, not any app.
Cargo cult programming is when you do some operation arbitrarily believing it is necessary without knowing what it is for, and when to apply it, if at all.
Such as chmod 0777, something that sadly has been engrained in people's psyche. it has almost zero application in normal circumstances.
Yes, avoid removal from the dashboard, this happened to me too. There should be a warning . Make a backup plugin folder call it old.plugins and keep them safe in case it happens again.

Your permissions should never be as such as this even being an option.
