  • I haven't actually tried installing it on my 1.0 board yet; I should check that out.
  • Just wanted to give the developer some feedback. I installed Transmogrifier in a brand new Vanilla 1 Forum, and it works perfectly. You can see the Forum at Esperantaj Retforumoj de AEA.

This is a Forum about Esperanto, the international language. Esperanto uses some accented letters (ĉ, ŝ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ and ŭ), which a lot of users have trouble finding a way to type, in their systems. Transmogrifier allowed me to use a 'cheat' - users can type specific letter-pair combinations, which are automagically 'converted' for display by Transmogrifier into their right Esperanto accented characters. For instance, the user can type "c^", and that will be displayed in their comment as "ĉ". This is fantastic! - and one of the main reasons why I ended up picking Vanilla over other web Forums.

My only suggestion for improvement, would be better compatibility with the "Preview Post" extension - the one that puts the "Preview Post" button under the comment field. For some reason, the text displayed in the Preview is not transmogrified.

Once again, many, many thanks - and keep up the good work!
  • That's awesome; it's nice to know that it works with non-english characters and that people are finding creative uses for it.

I'll check in on the Preview Post extension, to see what's wrong there.

@Bergamot: could I ask for a *big*, *big* favour? - actually, it's more of a feature request...

Right now, Transmogrifier changes ONLY the text inside comments. Would it be possible to have it work ALSO on the TITLE of the discussions - for instance, when listing the discussions in the main index page? The shortcuts I described above for typing the Esperanto characters are obviously not working when someone is starting a new discussion, and types the discussion title in...

Also, this feature would be *extremely* useful for something else: in allowing people to replace the "Sticky", "Bookmarked", "Closed" and "Hidden" tags with small icons, as described in this discussion.

Would that be very hard to do?
  • Is there any way to get this extension to avoid converting text into a smilie if we use the html formatter?
  • Actually is it possible to only have the transmogrifier work with the bbcode formatter? So if the format is set to text or html it won't work?
  • @ADM: just edit the config file, to remove all 'smilies' replacements. You can configure Transmogrifier there, to replace exactly what you want, and leave the rest.Is this what you were asking? - if not, I'm not sure I understand the question...
  • This could be a very useful plugin if it was a lttle bit more delicate. For example, I have used it to make HTML acronyms automatically - e.g. convert "peta" into peta. The problem is that when the word "peta" is in an URI, it will screw things up unfortunately, so I use it only for converting smileys.

OT: @DraganBabic: Actually I find that when "peta" shows up anywhere things get all screwed up ;)
  • icouto: No I mean I've got the problem that Dragan is having.. for example say I post some html and in the html is a :d or something then it'll convert to a smilie breaking the html. I don't want this to happen.. I only want it converting if the formatter is set to bbcode.
  • I can't think of any easy way to do that, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

    :)
  • People Eat Tasty Animals :-)
  • @ADM: this may be a silly suggestion, but here it goes: how about using a syntax for your smilies that will not be confused with normal character combinations found inside your html elements? Example: make it so that all your smilies have to be enclosed in square brackets - a syntax is similar to certain wikis - like: [:)] would get transmogrified, but just :) wouldn't. [:d] would get transmogrified, but just :d wouldn't. - etc... The only disadvantage is that you'd have to retrain your users to use the new syntax.
  • Yeah I'd rather avoid something like that to be honest.
  • Is there a site where I can get the common emoticons for free?
  • What about the issue "icouto" already described:
    >> My only suggestion for improvement, would be better compatibility with the "Preview Post" extension - the one that puts the "Preview Post" button
    >> under the comment field. For some reason, the text displayed in the Preview is not transmogrified.
I would also be interested in a PreviewPost integration of Transmogrifier. This means, the previewed posting should be transmogrified as well.
  • That would require a modification of PreviewPost, though not a difficult one.

Well, is it explained somewhere? I would be very grateful.

    Cheers

  • @Bergamot: while we are considering improvements to your already-excellent Transmogrifier, could I ask you to comment, perhaps, on this request I made earlier?

Transmogrifying more than just the text of comments would be amazingly useful!...
