DNS Move

edited June 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I am getting ready to make the move to the new server. Today I will be re-assigning the DNS servers for all of the Lussumo domains and I will be taking down all of the Lussumo sites on the old server.

I'm trying to do everything right this time around the block, and that means changing a lot about how I've set up my servers in the past. So, it's going to be a big, fat, messy move. You'll probably see all kinds of things that you shouldn't.

There should be 24 to 48 hours of downtime. Please take this opportunity to go outside and enjoy the summer. When we get back online things are going to blow up and you won't want to miss it.

Well, this is really fucking annoying, but mod_rewrite doesn't appear to be working on the new server (surprise, surprise). So, it will cause the following problems:

    1. You won't see nice urls here on the community site
    2. You will not be able to add comments on the swell blog
    3. You won't be able to use the addons site
    4. probably a bunch of other really annoying things.

It's been a long day, and I'm ready to slit my own throat. Goodnight.
  • /me dances the mod_rewrite doesn't work dance
  • The Vanilla Dev forum still needs to be installed.
  • Are we moving yet? I presume we've moved, but I can't tell! I've been sleeping this entire time!
  • Oh yes, it's messy indeed, I can't even access my account to enable quick links, agh!
  • Lech, did you forget to pack your account for the move? OK, lame metaphor. I just got a couple of MySQL errors after logging in. Overall, the response times seem a bit more snappy. Probably because everyone is outside playing.

I've been fixing everything up, but causing some errors at the same time. Expect that to happen intermittently over the next few days.
  • hello :)
  • Mark: welcome to my world :D

    Hehehe :)
  • i just cause errors. i don't bother with the fixing part - that's hard.
  • Hooorah! I have quick keys again!
  • I don't see any errors yet, but be wevy wevy quiet, I'm hunting errors, heheheheheheheh.

What a fucking nightmare. So they had scheduled the server to be down for 1 - 1.5 hours at 3am my time. I get up this morning at 7am and the server is down on all ports. I call the host and ask them wtf is going on. They say that on their local network everything is A-OK peachy-keen. I tell them that's very nice for them, but from OUTSIDE their network there's no access. After three hours of troubleshooting and having them tell me three times "It's back up, now. Sorry.", and me saying, "Actually, it's not. Try again.", it finally comes back online. Now the kicker. I go to the forum and click on a discussion - mod_rewrite is borked again! I take a look at the apache conf files and the htaccess files. Everything is configured properly - as it was yesterday when it worked. I've opened another ticket with them. I'm waiting to hear back. I'm really pissed and totally unimpressed. I've been involved with this company before, and they NEVER have problems like this. It is very out-of-character for them, I know. But that doesn't change that it's happening now. If I was paying for this month I'd be even more pissed.
  • Wow, man, that's odd indeed. I don't suppose you have the option to perform an apache restart for you server, do you?
