in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8

i have got a custom logo i want to add to my forum when it uploads in banner section it displays far to big,how would i correct this what size would it need to be using with the basic vanilla standard template,be gentle with me i have been only using the software for 2 days lol

    All this can be changed in the custom.css file of the theme you are using. I stronlgy recommend , no, I beg you to install firebug browser extension or similar web inspector so you can find and edit these things yourself . The links in my signature will take you to a tutorial and to the download for firebug .

    can i edit files im only using the free version hosted by my own server and not vanilla hosted ?

    Yes you can, just go into your file manager and find the themes folder then your theme and the design folder is the custom.css. If you are using the default theme, I suggest you create a custom.css file and add all the edits in there. I also advise to download several other themes and try them out and see how they are put together and maybe they will work for you without having to do too much to edit them.
