Noob Question on duplicate content for hosted vanilla forums
I recently just signed up for a hosted account and have my forum on
xxxx.vanillaforums.com
I would like to buy a domain and have the forum on forums.xxxx.com.
But wouldnt this be duplicate content and bad for SEO because whatever new content my forums.xxxx.com site will also show up on xxxx.vanillaforum.com site?
Am i missing something here?

Why would you want to have duplicate forums on hosted and nonhosted?
and if you mean duplicated on the hosted plan, questions would be addresed to vanillaforums.com.

I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.
You need to ask this question on vanillaforums.com
You wouldn't have duplicated content, the desired domain is simply pointed to the server.
grep is your friend.

Try searching for something like "avoid duplicate content redirecting" though your question is completely unrelated to special software.
Hmm maybe I asked the wrong thing. So I noticed the following for shoryuken.
Vanilla Site : http://shoryuken.vanillaforums.com/
Their own Site: http://forums.shoryuken.com/
Is that considered dup content? thanks again
Sure it is. Try to think about why search engines don't like duplicate content: if the content of any site X is not unique, it has been copied from some other side. Copying content is not creating great content and only great content should be ranked high.
So it i not a good idea to show the same content with two different URLs. Instead of this you can make your forum reachable under 2 different URLs but you should use a 301 redirection from one URl to the other.
At least, that's how I understand duplicate content. You'll get better advice on SEO specific forums though...
You need to ask for help at vanillaforums.com, it is pointless asking for help here, as this forum does not concern the hosted plans.
