Whabt about profile details and signature in comments?

I am currently trying several extensions and setting up a new forum. Sadly I need two simple features which I couldn't find for Vanilla at all. I need some way to see personal details from the user profiles near their avatar in a comment. Further more, signatures would be very good. Now that I got to like Vanilla I'd hate to go back to a Burning Board. I already tried to make my own extension but I "only" managed to create new menus and manipulating the actual comments instead of changing their appearance. Please give me a hint on how I can solve this.

From what I have been able to gather, there are no poster details and signatures in posts on purpose. They were deemed a waste of space and mostly useless. I agree - it detracts from the conversation, etc.

However, there was a signature plugin for 0.9.2. So, you might be able to take a look and modify it to your heart's content. ^_^
  • hahaaa. signature is this one thing I hate in other forums. thats why i use vanilla. no offence, people want different things.
  • I wouldn't mind a small single line quote either immediately after the post or to the right of the user icon.
  • yes, but people want to add amazing things to vanilla. reading this forum lately I keep asking myself. would this or that be easier just by integrating vanilla with other software via peoples tabel. or just using other forum software. but different people want different things.
  • I know, and that is the point of extensions. I don't think me or the OP are asking for it to be in the core. We'd just like seeing an extension implementing this.

so where would it lead us? are even admin people satisfied with having 40 or 100 extenions on their control panel?
  • Well that's the beauty of it. If you are satisfied having that many, you can add all the extensions you want. If not, you keep it minimal. I think its only a matter of time before someone makes a "vB" theme, and then there's no telling what you will see people doing with Vanilla.
  • I share the fear of those who don't want huge images and whole stories in signatures. Just a name, a link or a quote. Don't dare think of more than two lines. And what I like about Vanilla is, in fact, it has such an effective extensions system. I installed several extensions to my testing board and only 1 out of all 16 needed a real "hack", meaning adding one line each to three of the main files (this was the language selector). I would therefore very much like to stay away from deep hacks. Maybe I could easily make sigs and profile info beneath the avatar work, but that would mean to mess with code.
  • SirNot was the coder of the old signatures plugin for 0.9.2. He seems to be an active member of the vanilla community so I'm sure he would update it if you asked him politely. =)

SirNot did update his great extension:

Is anybody with CSS skills willing to help making user icons appear at the left of a comment?
I'd very appreciate that since it maybe the final add-on to make my vanilla perfect. :)
  • Yes. The icons at the left would be great. My users are coming from a phpBB board and they may be let down by the small user icons. I know I can increase the size, but it would sit at the top and create an eyesore. Is there a way to shove it all to the left instead of the top?
  • I experimented with that in the Tyco & Tonka styles. If I remember correctly, you can copy the CSS that just deals with comments and paste it in--and it should work.
  • I will take a look. Thanks! :D
  • Okay. I'm having some difficulty with how it displays other aspects of the CSS in my vanilla.css page. The comments display the same heading as the Discussions page on each post. I have an image in my PageInfo that repeats on alternating comments acting as a wallpaper. I fixed this by changing "repeat" to "repeat-x" which I don't mind doing, but then I still have the same image from my Discussions page at the top of every other comment. I can't do anything about that. I guess what I'm asking is, what properties are necessary to have the comment header pushed to the side without affecting anything else?
  • Putting this in #Comments .CommentHeader gets close... unfortunately, its been so long since I made those styles...width: 100px; float: left; clear: left;
  • Thanks again!
