Editing Themes
So I went on this page to find out more information on how to edit themes. http://vanillaforums.org/docs/featuresaddons-pluginscustomtheme
And from that I went to this page http://blog.vanillaforums.com/help/how-to-use-custom-theme-part-1-edit-html/ And it says that this is only for premium members.
Why would the doc on the open source vanilla website have a tutorial to edit themes that is only for people who pay for the premium version of vanilla?
Is there any way I can edit the themes / html in the admin panel without paying?

Because it applies to both.
I recommend you take a look at the Traditional Chocolate theme here in the add ons and the plugin that is required for it also in the add ons. It has a traditional table layout.
The idea is that you either create your own theme or find one that is close to what you want and edit it to look like you want.
Themes can be uploaded to your themes folder . Then you enable them from the dashboard. They have css files that you can edit.
You may tweak the layout some in the default.master.php pr tpl of the theme you are using.Do not edit the default theme.
