This may be dumb question, but rather than create a new style (which is giving me a headache with these directions: http://lussumo.com/docs/doku.php?id=vanilla:styles can I just modify the default css files already included? I KNOW CSS--and might actually succeed, where the php is making me crazy.

    Yes, you can edit the default style. I would back up the original or you can just download a fresh copy if things do not progress in the right direction.

    I realised from the other post that you were on v0.92. But, if you've now made the move to vanilla v1, then you're best off making a copy of the "default" folder in /themes/vanilla/styles/ with your own folder name and then working on that copy of vanilla.css. In "themes and styles" on the settings page you can set your new style (it will appear with the name of your folder) and you can always fall back to the original vanilla default theme if necessary.
