What is the best way to insert code in to forum discussion?

I have a programming related forum, so i have to add so many codes to forum discussion pages. What is the best way? Is there good syntax highlighter plugin?

Is it need to write codes on < code > block? I read this in somewhere. But without < code > block, still there is no problem...
And I write < code > block in a discussion pages, it is it also display..... Why?

you can use pretty print to add pre and highlight the code it uses google pretty print like on this forum.it adds linenums whenever you use pre as a tag
