Custom roles?

edited July 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Still loving learning more about Vanilla: it seems to be the best discussion set-up out there from what I've seen. A new question! Is there a way of adding or editing the roles that are assigned to people? For example, could the 'members' be called 'friends' or suchlike? Is it possible to add extra roles - like 'crew member', for example - without messing things up? How and where would you go about changing these variables? As always, help much appreciated. Thanks.

  • You can do all of those things in the Settings tab, under "Roles & Permissions".
  • I am stupid - and you are great! Seriously, thanks for pointing that out. Is there a way to have post rankings, so that when a user posts past a set amount, their role changes accordingly? For example, 1-100 posts = member 100-500 = expert 500-5000 = professional If you tell me that this too is already built into Vanilla, please point me in the right direction first - and then I will shoot myself in the face accordingly.
  • At the moment, you as the admin control and manage your board. there's not much automation like you're asking for there, while a users post and thread count does count up accordingly there's nothing which would automatically raise their permissions based on the number of posts they have. That would be somewhat silly to do considering the ammount of spam a user can create just to get that "expert" permission or greater and would prove they're experts at spam. At the moment, explore what you have and set your forum the way you want it to act and learn what it's already capable of (it's fairly powerful alone) then explore the add-ons directory and add whatever else you might need. And as always, welcome to Vanilla. :)
  • Mmm.. smells like an addon ^^

Hm... the user rankings thing could be interesting... anyone feel free to put it into an extension...
although this for me is like "nice, but not really that important"... it feels like some "tradition" from popular board systems which is not actually too usefull
