Add-on idea: Avatar generator

Lots of posts about how to draw pixel icons for yourself recently... What about an add-on that lets you generate your own, from a database of face parts, mr-potato-head stylee... So you would choose your hairstyle, it's colour, eyes, facial hair, nose, ears etc etc, and then save this as the default icon for your account. With the option to change it slightly whenever you wanted... I know someone who can {probably} draw these, if someone can help me build the plugin itself?

/me meekly raises hand, but is not sure how much free time he will have.
  • Haha no worries, it will probably take me about twelvty months to find all the parts I need for this anyhow :)
  • what a great idea, 3stripe!

I can do the generic database and PHP coding, image manipulation (GD, I presume) is something I would love to brush up on.

Javascript is something I know nothing about... but can stitch together some rollover effects to, say, try different moustaches on a face.

Have toyed with Image Magick, but don't expect many others to have it installed
  • no, no, no. why dont you just use piece of paper and pencil to draw some avatar? or call some friend who knows ho to draw.
  • 3stripe, you're a flash guy right? What about doing shapeform playdough shapes across a 32x32 grid. All on one large grid, then one real-size for real-time comparison. Not quite sure how you'll capture the finished output (or if that's even possible yet) but it couldn't be too hard to put something like that together, would it?
  • Aye that could work. I want to ask the guy who did my smilies to help out though... he's good with pixels... Taking the Flash route would give you some more drag&drop flexibility I guess... hmmm
  • Yeah, while I haven't messed with flashes recent releases, I think it includes a ton more function in terms of what you can output and save based on what's displayed upon the canvas. it might be easier than having to bring together infinite numbers of pieces to make up a face. Think of that south-park character generator to some degree.
  • I will ask around on my Flash haunts about this...

Walter is on board as well :)
  • :) Good luck, man. Hopefully people won't come here "barrowing" our self-made avatars then.
  • I'm sure we can do better than this: http://avatarmaker.abi-station.com/index_en.shtml
  • Yeah! I was gonna post this earlier actually...

Funny idea... Do you already have an idea of what the avatars would look like? I'd suggest a comic style.

And... the "avatar maker" linked above is horrible... just make it like choosing five or six attributes and nothin more... and no dozen extra windows please! ;)
  • Simple yes... I'm thinking maybe 16 variations of about 5/6 attibutes like you say, and option to choose colours for these... cartoony style probably...
