Adding to the main text parser

Ok, I'm a total n00b to vanilla, but I'm trying to code an extension to learn how to do it, and to start out basic, I'm making a parser, but I was wondering if it's possible to 'hook on' to the default Text parser and just add a few things to that, rather than making a new parse type?
