People should need licences to use PC's

edited August 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I mean honestly, how hard can it be to use a pc for more than a month without filling the bastard with spyware and viruses? What is it with idiot users...

Its even better when they're the only person that uses it, and they claim it wasnt them that broke it.

I take it you got the weekly "help me with my computer" call from one of your relatives? I love those.
  • yeah...friends/relatives/colleagues. whatever.

I had a guy at work ask me to fit him a cdrw the other week. So he brought his pc in and just as i was about to take his old cd drive out i noticed a little badge on the front saying 'CDRW'.

    "um....dude.."
  • "My cup holder is broken!" OMFG, that's not a cup holder you twat!

haha. /me remembers the days of daftware.com et al
  • That why I love MAC its simple and secure and a person with half a brain can use it, 10 yrs go by and it never breaks or talks back

Amen to that! I got my whole family to switch because I was tired of having to reinstall windows every few months just to keep it working.

Edit: Now they call asking how to do things, not how to fix them. And they call a lot less. Hurray!
  • "10 yrs go by and it never breaks" If only it were true. Our eMac just broke after less than 4 years - it took several attempts before the Mac repairers got the diagnosis right (at least I presume it's right!) that it is the HD controller on the main logic board, and not just a crashed HD or inadequate memory, and hence a new Mac (and $A2000) is needed. Bummer! Our first Mac, an LCIII, lasted a long time, but this is now the second to die in a shorter time than I would have hoped. I hope we just got unlucky, and it's not a trend that newer Macs are less reliable!
  • well I hope you gave it a proper funeral lol, ok then let me rephrase that part,it can last 10 yrs if you take care of it, > talk to it > read to it > masssage it > make sure it has its fill of widgets if you do these things it will last for a long time we all know how pc users treat their pc
  • just after seeing this thread. LOL Yip, I can agree with the sentiments in here. And if I can add another aspect to the mix. I often get folks I know asking me (coz, apparently - 'I am never off that pc' thus I know all things PC, they imagine) what spec of computer they will need. And it is always the same. Initially they suggest minimum usuage needs, and very limited processing needs (eg 'oh, we just need it for a bit of word processing, a couple of times per month). And you can bet your bottom dollar that once they have got this basic pc, they will very soon be pissed that their pc cannot edit movies/DVDS and launch NASA spaceships - ala 'our next door neighbour have a pc and they can do X, Y and Z on it.......what's wrong with our's?' In mitigation, thank frig modern PC prices are now so low, that even a basic spec pc does most things now. But in the old days, I had a fair bit to listen to.
  • Hell IS other people.
  • Agreed with the mac comment. My mom and 10 year old sister were so computer illiterate, I was reloading XP every other week. I'd say, "don't do this," and the next thing I knew, it was a fuxored up again. After I moved out, my mom couldn't blame it on me anymore, so that's a plus. But, after about the 5th reinstall, and the $300 of repairs that they went through in a matter of months at the local shop, I told them to buy a new iMac. They did and haven't had any problems since. At all. I'd be using a mac if I could reasonably afford one. But, eh, I'll deal with PC for the next year or so before I switch over.

  • "People should need licences to use PC's"

People should need licenses to use apostrophes.
  • edited August 2006
    lol. Shouldnt that be apostophe's?
  • plus Licenced Tv Remote Operators would be nice
  • About spywares and reinstalls, I agreed with this topic yesterday when first reading it but now well I changed my mind ...

Blame the OS-maker, not the users! (at first)
    1. it's true
    2. MS doesn't care if you insult them, your users (parents, relatives, friends) do
    3. it doesn't happen with every OS
    4. it doesn't happen with a Microsoft OS when properly configured (so why isn't it properly configured by default, hu?)
That said, I still have no clue for the CDRW dude (#3 post) ;)
  • I would contribute to this post, but I really do not need to raise my blood pressure any higher than it already is.

    But I completely agree.
  • I use Ubuntu Linux, it takes a bit more to set up, but it work good.
  • Someone please help.

can someone insert/add a Telephone number Field in the Personal Information section please?
I really need this addon and I won't ask for anymore favor ever again :(

    Thanks in advance guys.
  • what is that doing in this thread?
