captcha during login?

edited July 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I'm looking at having the ability for people to register without needing approval, HOWEVER, I don't want bots & such like to be able to auto join ... SO I'm wondering if anyone has built a Captcha extension?

Comments

  • Captcha (and related tech) is

    1. Easy to break
    2. Inaccessible to blind/vision-impared users
    3. Inaccessible to anyone using a text-only browser, or who turns off images
    4. Annoying to everyone else
  • okay all fair comments .... Any good recommendations then to help prevent/reduce the chance of registrations turning into spam? I'm looking to use Vanilla to power a blog type system
  • There really is no substitute for active moderation. Vanilla helps a little bit by putting reasonable limits on post length and frequency.
  • yeah and I've locked that right down for this instal :)

Hmmm. This would make for a pretty cool extension. It can most definitely be achieved, I just don't know of any decent existing plugins to integrate. Does anyone else?
  • hmmm, I presume maybe having an email confirmation, like when vanilla sends a url instead of the password to log the person in, I presume something like that could be used to verify the address and send the user back to the forum to validate their info. It beats capcha and anyone who wants to use the forum will need at least a valid email.
