I'm wondering if having a Shoutbox takes away from the forum experience for anyone. As in, do you end up losing content from regular, searchable discussions by having people chat it up with shoutbox?

It depends, it should be only for short messages not to be used as a chat box. Some people like having that. But private messages are more popular than chat box ever could be. You need to try it out and see what the users want.

I posed the same question to myself. And I guess for my community it makes the website feel more alive, since once a while there might be activity on the chat feed while you are writing a post.
As a community owner and website owner you want your users to be as engaged as possible and stay for as long as possible on the site.
