Internet Explorer 8 - Win 7 - 1024 x 768

I'm new to Vanilla and by corporate policy have to use IE8 at1024 x 768 resolution. However, the appearance and operation doesn't seem right. See the enclosed PNG. For example, the left and right margins are cut off -- I can't see the gear icon in the upper right and so no logoff is available. Also, when I tried to comment on an activity a black box popped up saying "Error 503 Service Unavailable, Guru Meditation: XID...".

Are these problems typical on IE8 at this resolution or is it something with my environment?

Any suggestions appreciated.

good eyes, I can hardly read that ..
