Am I missing something regarding [SINK]

edited July 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
How in the world do you turn off the [SINK] function? I've searched all over this forum and can't seem to find the answer. If it can't be turned off, is there at least a way to alter the amount of time it takes before a post is sunk?

  • Huh?

You turn it off by clicking "Unsink this discussion"

I have no idea what you mean by "the amount of time it takes before a post is sunk"
  • I guess I don't fully understand how topics are sunk. Is it a matter of time passing from the last active post, or does someone have to manually sink a post?
  • Sinking just means that if someone posts a reply to the topic it wont return to the top of the discussion lists (as normal) It's an extension.
  • A moderator or admin has to also manually sink a thread, it doesn't happen automatically.

Not an extension, a permissions setting, I have disabled it, my users can't see the point of it, neither can I, it just takes up space and confuses things.
  • What is a good usage case for sinking?

    just curious.

  • I love the sink feature. I haven't put it to much use yet, but it seems it would be very useful for a high traffic forum. If there was an ongoing discussion between a few people that kept bumping up the list, you could sink it. Or if there is a dying discussion but you don’t want to close it off to final questions, sinking would be handy. Like this one.
  • It's not an extension? I totally thought it was. My mistake. You can still disable it though, so no problem huh? It was originally suggested by a member of this forum and Mark in his infinite wisdom decided it was a cool idea and good enough to go into the core. Some people like it and use it (i think it's definitely interesting) and others dont so they can choose not to use it. It's kinda like an opposite to sticky. I have no idea whatsoever, but i wouldnt be too shocked if Mark took it back out the core and made it into an extension somewhere down the line. Who knows...he's always finding ways to cut down the core as much as possible.
