Installing FileUpload on shared web hosting service

A couple of years ago, I was able to install an older version of FileUpload with an older version of Vanilla. And it worked for me on a shared web hosting service (the only thing which did not work was the real-time progress bar because PECL was needed to be installed I think).
Now, I am unable to use the latest version of FileUpload with the latest release of Vanilla. Mine is a shared web hosting service. When I upload a file, it just hangs while trying to upload. I believe it is because of no PECL APC on the server. Is there a workaround to this? For the time being, I won't be able to switch to a dedicated server.
Thanks!

always a good idea to read the comments and discussions located on the page when you go to the plugin.
and mention the exact version number of the plugin you are using.
as well as the version of vanilla you are using!
Also, people have the option of posting here, it helps the community (people like yourself, helping people like yourself)
