thanks to all the good folks in the thread i got home today, and tried the 3 fix-its that were recommended. ie first, i tried the checkdisk (CHKDSK) command thingie from the c prompt......it told me there was error/s on my hard disk....but it did not fix them or tell me any more. secondly, i tried to fix the master boot record with the FIXMBR command from the c prompt. But I didn't go through with it, after it warmned mne that i risjkked losing all, if my partition tables were reset wrong;ly. thirdly, and this was my last resort from the c prompt, i used the FIXBOOT command from the c prompt.......this command writes a new boot section onto the system partition..and yehhaaa, it worked in seconds and so beautifully. My pc booted up straight away!!! I must keep these commands written down for future use. I suspect that my pc either was closed down wrongly the night before my probs, or else a power surge overnight (possibly from lightening) messed up the MBR. Thanks everyone!
  • Theyre a handy trio. I'm pretty sure chkdsk /r should do the repairs too (unless it cant) - if it doesnt even try then it might be /p or something. And as i say i know it warns you about fixmbr but i've never had a problem. Glad you got it working anyway.

what is /p ? i just typed in chkdsk.....did i need to add a slash and an r or p, maybe? ps - thanks for the great tips.....these three commands are so useful to me from now on.
  • yeah sorry i should have made it more obvious. Using chkdsk just checks the disk, chkdsk /r fixes any errors it finds.
  • minisweeper, no worries....i am pretty ignorant re such things.....you were not to know.

i must write these commands all down.....every year or two i run into simialr probs re my pc not booting up.

    Many thanks.
