Authentication

I assume, from the fact that I see Facebook Authentication, that I can create an authentication system of my own, but I can't see anything in the documentation.

I have members, with existing passwords, in a site, where I would like to add Vanilla.

Most important is to automatically log members in to Vanilla, when those members are already logged in within my existing system.

People who are not logged into the main system should not be able to view Vanilla. The main system is a PHP bespoke CMS. Facebook login is not an option.

Am I missing it in the documentation? Is it possible?
