Vanilla 2.2 claims to have full utf8mb4 support - i.e. it supports the new emoji unicode characters. But there is still a JS issue:

The issue appears when posting any unicode emoji e.g. from http://apps.timwhitlock.info/emoji/tables/unicode. Unless one performs a full page reload, the unicode emoji isn't rendered correctly.
