username from cookie?

I'm trying to integrate a simple ajax chat into my forum. I've set up the chat, made a new page with pagemanager, and am pulling in the chat page via an iframe.

I'm wondering if there is a way to get the username of the member in the forum from a cookie, or by other means and automatically apply it to the chat so users don't have to enter their username everytime they go to the chat page.

Any help much appreciated.

er, there's a lace add-on in the directory which does this, but without the page manager bit (ie it just links to your install of lace in another window).
