I'm sure there was a setting allowing you to set default roles for newly registered users, but I can't find it anywhere in the settings anymore.
Was this removed? How can I add roles to new users?

There has been /role/defaultroles but it has been removed
Now you can create/edit a role and assign a standard role to it by chosing it from a dropdown
