Portal type page

Would it be hard to make a portal page for vanilla. I do not mean the rubbish portals you get but a way of extracting data and displaying it in any layout.

    latest discussion (for certain categories), latest comment, search, pull news from the forum, latest member you know any any more you can think of really.

    The "All Discussions" page really is designed to be a portal for your forum; Most of that stuff is already there, or could easily be added with extensions.

    ok well lets change it to how can i intergrate my site with vanilla, using vanilla content on my site.

    Well all that stuff is sitting in your database, so if you're reasonably knowledgeable about data-driven web programming, it can be done.

    If not, well then pretty much no. It's no harder doing this stuff from Vanilla than from any other app, but it's no easier either.

    would it be best to do running off vanilla? as in make a new home.php file in the root and use vanilla for it?

    I would love this function to be considered. I've been looking for a forum software that also has an integrated portal and I was hoping that vanilla will have one since vanilla's my top choice forum but had to go against it just because of a lack of the portal function. I keep hoping though. Immersion's idea would be good but not really replace the home.php. something like a portal.php and have vanilla redirect the front to the portal.php but also have an option to go to the home.php.

    I guess Immersion wanted some widgetish things Change what on the left pane, right pane, up, down the page. It should be more easy.

    Nuggets could be added with queries that grab the peices of data... like MySchizoBuddy demonstrates grabbing the newest member here: Newest member username & profile link. # 2
