Can't view Categories or discussions

I am testing Vanilla (and come other discussion boards). I created categories in the backend and started a discussion in one of the categories from the front end. I can view the see the category list, I can see the discussion but when I click on the recent topic/post I get an error that the site is unable to handle the request. The error log on the site shows [20-Sep-2016 04:02:36 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_detect_encoding() in /home/{site}/public_html/development/vanilla/library/vendors/simplehtmldom/simple_html_dom.php on line 988
Any suggestion to fix this issue?

You have to enable the mbstring extension
