How to modifying Vanilla code to allow read-only categories?

Hi everyone, I came across Vanilla recently and it would be perfect for our non-profit community website. But we'd like to have read-only categories where our staff can provide updates. I've done a search and did find some posts regarding this often requested feature, but I'm not looking for anything elaborate. I know PHP and work with it all the time, but don't really understand Vanilla's object oriented PHP structure. It's hella confusing. :-) Can I just comment out a few lines of code or something for a simple fix? Thanks, - Matt.
