hide IP addresses without css?

edited February 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I don't necessarily want everyone seeing everyone else's IP addresses all the time. i don't even want to see them myself unless there's a problem with a user. just turning them off via css is not enough. i don't want them in the page source either. has anyone done this? thanks!

  • hmmm why does it matter if they are in the source?
  • because i don't want everyone having access to them. it's not my place to distribute people's identifiers if they don't want them distributed.

Yeah - I was thinking of doing this for the next revision as well - make it a role-based thing.
  • that is a good idea.
  • yup make it role based.

YOUR COMPUTER MIGHT BE BROADCASTING AN IP ADDRESS!
  • omfg hack the planet
  • i had a user ask me about removing this today because when you google their IP, the number one result is a post by them in my vanilla forum. then you click their name and it displays their name and info.

it should be an option to remove. only admins should be able to see IPs....
  • dozens, upgrade to 9.2.6 or wait for 1.0 to be released. I'm 99.9% sure that it is role based.
  • it is. there's a checkbox under role management for "IP Addresses Visible"
  • It's not like every site you go to can see your IP :P
  • this is not about the site admin seeing your IP.
it's about all the users on the board seeing your IP.
  • i hope you're kidding
  • hahaha!
  • I love how those things always get my ip wrong due to my transparent web proxy/cache even though it's easily possible to get my ip with php work.
