Can I reply to a notification email and include my email-reply in the forum discussion?

I have read that this is possible for the cloud-version (SaaS) offered by Vanilla Software. However, I do not know if this is possible for the self-hosted open source solution as well.
I think often users just want to simply send a quick reply per email instead of accessing the actual forum thread.
Any idea on that?
