Dashboard not found after upgrading from 2.2 -> 2.5

So, what I did was follow the instructions in the readme file.

After logging in I was unable to access certain sections of the dashboard (plugins, for instance).

So I followed the advice to delete the controller (/applications/vanilla/controllers/class.settingscontroller.php)

Now I have no dashboard at all ("Page not found").

Any advice..?

However, the menu links in the dashboard are all over the place. Something is clearly very wrong here.
