Why can't I install Vanilla?

I followed the install instructions contained in the 2.5 Vanilla download but the install page does not show. One instruction puzzle me it says "Confirm the cache, conf, and uploads folders are writable by PHP." What does it mean? I use 777 on the files I have a good server with all the requirements. Inside the cache and the conf folders there is htaccess "deny all". I remove it but still no install page on my browser. Does anyone know what to do? Thanks

Does your server use Apache HTTP Server? Instead of the install page, what do you see at the main link of your website? Does it redirect you to another URL and/or just show a blank page?

Add Pages to Vanilla with the Basic Pages app

Do you already have renamed the ".htaccess.dist" to ".htaccess"?

  • I use Hiwit.net which is a professional server with Apache. They told me to make a htaccess file with "AddHandler application/x-httpd-php71.php" in htaccess file to get the php7.1 but I can't even access to the vanilla subfolder. Should I change something in the htaccess.dist file or in a config file ? Thanks for helping

  • I did change "htaccess.dist" to "htaccess" I used to get a blank page bow I can't access to the Vanilla folder as I can of any of the different sites I have at this address. Do I have to put it in "web" subdomain?

  • Hi Shadowdare and RJ thank you for your help.

I get an "internal server error" when I browse to the vanilla folder. I renamed the dist en htaccess and put"AddHandler application/x-httpd-php71.php " at the top. I am on mySQL 8.0 and on phpMyadmin 3.2.O. I uploaded yhe Vanilla folder as is, without changing permissions.

What can I do? is there a config file or something else to do to get to the install engine?

I guess MySql 8 is the problem. Please see here: https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/comment/253066/#Comment_253066
