Upgrade to MySQL 5.7

Does anyone know of a guide or tutorial for moving a Vanilla database to a new version of MySQL?
Currently running Vanilla 2.8 on MySQL 5.5.
MySQL 5.7 is now available with my ISP, but a first attempt to simply export and import the existing sql file failed miserably.

That shouldn't be any problem. Here are two links which I would say give good advice on how to do it based on the level of access that you have to your database:
If it still fails, try to explain "fails miserably"
