Archived category still visible and users able to post [3.0.1]

As per the title, I'm trying to archive a couple of categories and as I understand it per the docs, it should hide them from the main categories list and nobody should be able to post
Archived- This removes the category from the main index and prevents threads in the category from coming up in the site-based search. Archived Categories are still indexed by search engines and can prevent broken links.
I have selected that option as well as 'Hide from the recent discussions page' and it seems to not work. The categories are still displayed on the main home page and people can still post, tested with a regular user test account.
What could be the problem? Have I misunderstood "Removes the category from the main index"?
Thanks!

"prevents threads in the category from coming up in the site-based search. Archived Categories are still indexed by search engines"
Change role permission to prevent users from posting in or seeing the categories.
Indeed that's what I was going to do, but it'd still be good to understand why this isn't working.
Because it is not what it does.
Please read it again - take note of the word "search":
"prevents threads in the category from coming up in the site-based search. Archived Categories are still indexed by search engines"
I think you mistake "main index" for the category view/list.
Oh I'm with you now. Yes, I've always considered the "main index" of a forum to be the home page, but now I realise it means the search index. Not a huge deal but perhaps they should add that word, just to be clearer.
