Hi, I notice that the software puts #latest at the end of discussion URL's on my laptop but it does not with my mobile, is that not confusing to search engines?

It does so when you are logged in(taking you to the first of the latest unread comment(s) or the latest comment if you already read all comments).
Search engines are not logged in and so do not get this service(no #latest in url).
I get latest on both desk/laptop and mobile, I do not know why you would not - other than if you are not logged in.
Thanks for the information, I probably wasn't logged in when on my mobile. So when you submit a URL to webmaster tools just make sure it doesn't have the #latest tag.
Yup :-)
Any hyperlink in a html document that has the hash sign, is only a link to a special anchor in the page. These are the links to the comments in this page:
https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/comment/259516/#Comment_259516
https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/comment/259517/#Comment_259517

As you can see, the main link stays the same. I would bet search engines do not care about everything behind the hash sign.
